La monocollocabilità: un fenomeno di interfaccia tra sincronia e diacronia

The present study examines Italian expressions containing a so-called monocollocable word (MW), whose range of combinability is restricted to one single word or, according to a more flexible conception, to a few other lexical units. It is assumed that MWs always occur within phrasemes in the broader sense, be they referential (e.g. idiomatic expressions or collocations), communicative (e.g. routine formulae) or structural (e.g. complex conjunctions). It will be shown that monocollocability represents a scalar phenomenon and is to be situated at the interface between synchrony and diachrony, as it is usually associated with a given synchronic moment in a language, while for detecting its causes it is necessary to turn back in time; as will be revealed, in many cases MWs result in fact from a diachronic unicalization process. Selected examples of MWs will be analysed in order to identify possible reasons for their existence and to see whether the syntactic-formal structure and the phraseme type of the superordinate phrase may have (had) any influence
on their monocollocability.
